Google is Scary
Published 6 years ago in life storiesThis doesn’t need any comment from me:
No this is not some slight of hand or illusion, it works.
Google Scares Me. David Weinberger posts that Google.com can be capable of some very scary (and powerful) things. He suggests trying the following: “1. Go to google.com 2. Type in your phone number, in quotation marks 3. When it finds your name and address, click on “Maps” 4. You are here.” … [Lockergnome's Bits and Bytes]
It’s scary enough on its own. Don’t tell my wife about this please.

It would be scary if Google actually found me when I enter my phone number, instead it finds somebody called “Henry Stannard” who lives about 10 miles away. I wonder how up to date this information is? I’ve had my phone number for 11 months.
It had us right. Even had my grandfather, who’s been dead for 5 years now (though granny probably still keeps bills in his name).
Not so sure how exploitable this is. Our county has all it’s real estate info online. You can search by name, and find out everything about the house they own. Like Kristi Yamaguchi, for example. If anything, the Google directory just takes a step out of throwing darts at a phone book.
You can pay the phone company for the privilege of not listing your number.
That seems to be where google gets the info from.
I’m aware of that. However, I find that my number being listed more often allows people I want to find me to find me than people I don’t want. And since most telemarketing is the result of customer lists that are sold, the phone book (or google) is not very likely to be used for those purposes often enough to justify hiding from people you want to find you. IMO.
If you click on the icon next to the search feature you will get another page. on that page is a link to remove your information from google.
google is not working! jus tried to search something, and saw it on tv too. well, for the uk it aint workin anyway…
