Froogle is gonna be huge
Published 6 years, 6 months ago in marketing + advertisingThis is huge. Google is beta testing Froogle, a new shopping search engine tool. This has a huge potential… freakin’ huge potential.
The big question to me is whether or not this will really impact the way marketing is done online… Search Engine Optimization will become a big piece of catalog sites as of right now if it wasn’t already (and I doubt it was before now).
Anyways… Frugal, I mean Froogle, is available (as a beta) just in time for last minute Christmas shopping.
(Can anyone say look out Amazon?)

I don’t see this becoming huge or there is something I don’t understand about this. I used it for a few minutes and it isn’t better or even comparable to sites like pricegrabber, pricescan, or mysimon.
Maybe because pricegrabber, pricescan or mysimon aren’t GOOGLE?
I don’t see Amazon getting hurt… They are cheaper than everyone most often (due to their size… think WalMart). Also like the previous comment, it really isn’t that great. I’d love to be able to sort by price, and do a few other things that aren’t available. The other beta services have been a lot better (and even some of the lab services). Hopefully there will be lots of improvement.
Also, Amazon makes it easy. Time is money… Who else has one click and free shipping (don’t even say Apple, you know what I mean). I don’t want to give all my info to some no name that has a good price. Overall I’d rather stick with a trusted source (I go to Target once instead of 10 stores).
The people this is going to be “hugest” for, is Google themselves… Imagine the astronomical “referral” fees they can rake in from Amazon’s reseller program and the likes… In people’s minds, Google = internet search. For a lot of people, it goes even further; Internet search = Google! Imagine when product {books, CDs, DVDs, other…} searches == Google/Froogle in people’s minds? THAT’s going to be huge. If Google went IPO, I would invest. Big…
The only interesting thing about this is that Google is doing it…and I’m not sure that they’re even doing that good a job. With a lot of products that have unique codes assigned by the vendor instead of/as well as names, you can do a normal search on the code to find a lot of online vendors that carry it. Of course, then you have to parse each page, which is easy for a human, not so much for Google.
Some manufacturers already make marginally different products for different retailers, specifically to make it difficult to comparison-shop. I wonder if things like Froogle will accelerate that.
This is huge because the potential numbers google brings to the table. From no eyes to thousands overnight. If they focus on keeping it simple for million to use they WILL NOT GO WRONG. Watch google and others. A new generation was born of technology gurus and our senior business execs are directing us. A pair never seen in this decade.
