New inluminent/weblog default view — No Images
Published 5 years, 7 months ago in design + dev
A long, long time ago… Kasia asked me to get rid of the images on inluminent/weblog.
I immediately wanted to do what she asked, as I didn’t mean to offend Kasia, or any other female readers. But, I didn’t know how to do it quickly, and I was in the middle of getting ready to start a new job, and move to a new city. Scott also asked me to make the images optional.
At the time, I couldn’t figure out how to do it easily. No one else emailed me with a complaint, but I’ve seen a few comments on other blogs since they asked.
Alas…. I’ve figured out an easy way to do it, thanks to the clean code on Zeldman.com. I’ve watched how Zeldman does things like hiding menus and switching stylesheets with awe (ok, it’s not that hard, but it was something I didn’t know how to do) and finally sat down today to play with the idea of ‘hiding’ the images from readers.
And, I figured it out. I’m using two stylesheets to do this. The default stylesheet includes this piece of code:
img {
display: none;
border: 0;
}
And the alternate stylesheet includes this piece of code:
img {
display: block;
border: 0;
}
I’m not sure that I know what that little difference does, but I do know that if you click the little no images or images link on the right sidebar above the calendar, you’ll get the effect that you’re looking for.
I’ll get rid of the image in the header graphic eventually, but wanted to tell Kasia and Scott that I’ve succeded. Individual posts still contain the images, as well as a call to an old stylesheet, but I’ll fix those soon.
[update: I've modified the switch.js file so that it is a complete copy of the zeldman switch.js file, which means that it now sets a cookie when you change the style, which saves your default style to your browser... so next time you come back, your prefered style should be preserved -- thanks for the request Erik]
[2nd update: All pages now default to no images, but if you select the image rich stylesheet, that behavior will follow you throughout the site, and still work when you come back. Choose your own desire. -- Sidebar: RSS feeds will still include images for a while... unless someone requests that I offer an RSS feed without images]
[3rd update: seems to work fine in Mozilla 1.1 on OS X, IE on OS X, and crashes Safari on OS X... no idea why... haven't checked any Windows browsers... leave a comment if this switching of stylesheets breaks your browser]

It would be cool if you could set a cookie so that the preference stayed. Each time I come back the default of no pics sets in.
I’m glad you’re keeping the images available, I love the cognitive dissonance they create — smart content/dumb pictures.
OK, they’re not dumb. But while your content appeals to my higher brain, the pictures tickle my mammalian instincts.
What has this world come to? *sigh* j/k folks
Oh, sure, blame it all on me
Thanks John! For the record I just want my co-workers to stop teasing me over reading this weblog — I’ve nothing against scandidly clad females!
There’s something odd though with this new function, and I don’t know yet if Safari (1.0 beta v.51) is the culprit or if your code is guilty
When I switch to “images”, it works fine, but if I switch back to “no images”, then Safari crashes and quit.
And it doesn’t do this on Zeldmann’s.
Cheers,
K.
safari luves the pictures…that’s why its crashses if you click no image…a “silent” protest!
Your script works great on Win IE6 and Win Phoenix (you did ask for confirmation right?).
My “mamillian instincts” thank you for coming up with a solution that allows me to read (and recommend) your content at work, yet still oggle Ms. January 23rd.
wow! what a big thing. thought the pics were great and there is no argument against esthetics to my mind. anyway, thanks fo having the option.
This is a good feature, if no other reason than I can read your fine blog at work, which I didn’t dare do before, since it was so, err, “eye-catching.”
The option is nice, though. I can have one flavor at work, and one at home.
I guess I’m a little slower than the rest, but I can’t figure out how to “turn the images back on.” I’m using NetNewsWire Lite 1.0.2 and OmniWeb 4.1.1. I see the images under NetNewsWire Lite, but I don’t see any way to “turn the images on” when I view the web page under OmniWeb. Help!!
Wow!
I just noticed that there were words on your weblog
now, must turn images back on…
no, really, the option is a great feature.
speaking of beauty, the girl on the header graphics, she seems manuela arcuri. inluminent, am i wrong?
Thanks for the option. It is now safe to read your blog at work.
Actually that girl in the header graphic is Elizabeth Hurley
noel, since i like the challenges i’ve just done a quick search about manuela, i’ve found the source image for the heading gfx (the top one, not the girl on the left side). warning for the americans, the picture contains female nudity:sun shower.
10-4… silly me. maybe I should have noticed that you said “header” graphic. Very good googling (I’m guessing), on your part. I’ll be sure to add her to inconceivably when i get the time to.
apparently no-one else has asked yet.. but i’d like to request the ‘no-images’ default for the rss feed. ta!
{sigh} still images in the rss feed. could you maybe do something with a query-string? like ‘index.rdf?images={yes,no}’? not work-safe to read through my aggregator at work, alas..
