HTML messages are ubiquitous now. Without being able to natively read HTML mail you are missing out. Maybe **some people** can express themselves with _ascii_ but most people in the real world like to have the option of rich text formatting. There'sa plug-in for Mail.app to enable Hotmail functionality, and I use Entourage with it's built-in Hotmail support.. but it feels chunky.
