I Robot Now - order an NS-5

Wow!!!

If you haven’t seen IRobotNow.com, then you’re missing the best online advertisement I’ve ever seen…

IRobotNow.com is a website where you can order your very own robot, completely configured the way you want it. You can watch videos of the NS-5 in action and learn more about how a personal domestic assistant can improve your life, how it was developed, and who’s behind it. And best of all, the company behind the NS-5 will be shipping them on July 16th.

Dean Kamen of Segway fame doesn’t hold a candle to Dr. Alfred Lanning, inventor of the NS-5.

The NS-5 will revolutionize the world, or at least that’s what the product literature available online says…

… or will it?

In reality, there is no such thing as the NS-5. It’s a marketing ploy for a movie… but you’d never know that from the website.

The only giveaway that this website isn’t real is the link to the privacy policy on the ’sign up for updates’ page. From the privacy policy, it’s pretty clear that Fox Films is behind this website, and that they’re using it as some sort of viral marketing tool for their movie I, Robot, coming out next summer and based on Isaac Asimov’s writings of the same name. And if you haven’t read the books, you’re missing out on a huge piece of Sci-fi history.

Best damned advertisement I’ve seen for an upcoming movie yet.

Too bad, I really want one.

    Merry Christmas John! :)

I think I new pretty much from the get-go that this wasn’t real. We’re not quite there yet. Though Sony’s QRIO seems like quite a leap forward.

I’ve never read I, Robot the series, but it seems like it might have some similarities to Spielberg’s “AI”?

Are you sure its not real?

I saw the advertisement in a movie theatre, email me and tell me please.

I’d say Asimov’s “I robot” is well above AI. The very first page of the book introduces the three laws of roboics which play the book’s creed from there on…

What’s so good about I Robot is the approach on robotics… Asimov doesn’t bother to tell how or why they work, except by a few certain mentions of some important parts’ tasks… But the main idea is how the laws enter in conflict with the world surrounding the robots.. The tasks they’ve been given and how some times the three laws aren’t quite enough to keep men safe. And obviously a very important part is the psychology of the robots themselves, how they reach conclusions and come up with theories about their own existance or their relationship with mankind.

The very last chapters feature a thrilling story on the incursion of robots in society, undercover of course, and how they take control not only not disobeying the 3 laws, but seeking their fulfilling.

I robot isn’t a series itself, but a very shocking episode of what awaits mankind on the path of deciding how far to go into robotics, especifically artificial intelligence.

However, other of Asimov’s books, the robots of dawn is a very complete series that will, just as I robot, keep you on the very edge of your seat.

Asimov wrote several other stories about robots, about the Sci-Fi genre and about the craft of writing Sci-Fi itself. Always, proving very advanced to his era and foreseeing quite successully how much there is to robotics and ai that many even today don’t even think about.

  4. Gravatar Icon 4 Oscar

Sorry, made a mistake, the robots of dawn is another book of the “robot series” but neither it nor I Robot, are series themselves.

When i saw the commercial in a theater for the NS-5, i had an idea that it might have something to do with Asimov, especially after i saw “3 Laws Safe”. So i went to the website and was completely confused. The website gives no hint that it is a movie. However after doing some more digging I found that it was actually going to be a movie. I am very excited about this because i have read almost all of Asimov’s books on robots and they were possibly the best books i Have ever read. The way he explores the 3 Laws that “keep the robots from harming the humans” is amazing. I can’t wait for this movie.

If you look carefully at the web site, names and products match from Asimovs short storys.

I WAS READY FOR THE ‘REAL THING’ MAN!

  8. Gravatar Icon 8 grovestand

when i saw this i was in complete awe. i have never read his books, so i wascompletely convinced that the NS-5 was real. i told friends, family, and then decided to search up on it more. i searched for NS-5 And IRobot and found the Fox site withthe title irobot. i then searched more and found articles connecting these 2 things. i then wondered (i have seen the comemrcial in theatres) why i havnt seen one commercial adverting the movie but rather just “Introducing the ns-5, what will you do with yours”, sounding and looking exactly like it could be real or a movie advert.smart fox fellows keepin their name away from the screen.

I just can’t believe that its fake. I’m so depressed now. Man, can you imagine….Wow. wow and wow! HAHA Cheers.

  10. Gravatar Icon 10 Mateo

Wow…fooled me……My jaw hit the floor when I saw the website…well done fox people…well done…..although I don’t think that something similar to the NS-5 is far off. Maybe this the governments way of easing us into the idea of A.I. being apart of our daily lives…do you really think they would just throw something of that magnitude at the public….I don’t think so…But I guess these days anything is possible.

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 keyfreak

man, that sucks, i had just convinced my friends and family of how cool the NS-5 was. i had been keeping up to date with all the newest robotic technology, and should of known that these advancements where to far away. oh well, maybe in a few years.

  12. Gravatar Icon 12 bob

i found out this NS-5 was fake and now im pissed . The guys at fox are dicks. I mean isnt that illegal like false advertizment or

    something?

  13. Gravatar Icon 13 crazy b

Yeah, that sucks, i just now found out that it was fake, it seemed like it might have been real, but i was wondering why you couldnt figure what the price was going to be and such. Seems like it’ll be a good flick when it comes out, im gessing july 16!

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 David B. Bitton

What made me suspicious was that something so advanced had yet to show up in the media.

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 Chris S

Hmmm…. When i looked at the site i could have sworn it mentioned something about the movie. But it said that the movie would release the same day that the Robot would. That way they could market Both. I dont seem how they could go and mess with people like that. Well when it comes to July 16 I’ll see for myself if it is a Fake. So if it is i will be more than mad. I was planning on getting one. And one last thing, Why is it you can design your own and register for information on the NS-5? Well i guess we’ll have to find out. If anyone wants to talk to me about it e-mail me.

  16. Gravatar Icon 16 Tomer

The strangest thing is that there is really a company named IROBOT. They are the ones that came out with the Roomba and they also do a bunch of work for the military. http://www.irobot.com

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 Steve

I just stumbled on the site myself, but I did realize rather quickly that it was fake because when they mentioned the 3 laws, they gave credit to the Dr. that designed them . . Not Issac as had expected. this is the best promo for a movie every !! and a hell of a good read . . now they just need to transform the Foundation Series (yes all 9+ books) into a movie series (which would more then likely take 12+ movies to tell correctly) now everyone who is getting mad at fox for this . . it is far from false advertisement, because the NS-5 will be made avalible . . . on the screen . . ha ha, creative thinking on Foxs part. Great to see there are still innovators in marketing. (but sad to see there is very little innovation in movie plots . . all good films now seem to be made from books) . . . AI will be forgotten in the wake of this movie and story . .which I think I’ll read again

The web site does exactly what it was intended to do - provoke people into thinking about the ethics, problems, and laws that need to be discussed, and are brought forward in tne book and the movie. If the viewer can be convinced that this add IS real, then how far off are we from it BEING real? We better start thinking and creating laws TODAY, so we are not caught off guard like we were with cloning. The web site was VERY thought-provoking and controversial, just as Asimov had intended his book to be. An absolutely excellent web site, I am showing it to all of my computer engineering students, before they find out the web site’s true purpose, and it is invoking considerable discussion about the problems and concerns regarding the introduction of robotics. Since they did not know the intent of the site, and genuinely believed that the robot was real, the discussions were VERY intense and heart-felt. Maybe, through sites like this, and movies like the Matrix (especially Animatrix)and I, Robot, we will be prepared. Compared to AI, Millenium Man, and the Terminator movies, I, Robot is MUCH closer to reality, and hits home a lot harder. The reality of it can not be dismissed. The gut feelings that the web site is producing in people are real - people are feeling true emotions, not fake, artificially manipulated feelings of typical “Hollywood” movies.

    Just a GREAT web site.

  19. Gravatar Icon 19 Ben

I’ll have to reread I, Robot, but I think that Dr. Lanning and all those guys were characters in the book.

  20. Gravatar Icon 20 Anthony Sanchez

I was thinking two things, if this is a movie, they’re going through a lot to convince people that this is an awesome movie. Or that these 3 doctors were begining the rise of the machines. And if they were to sell this robot to the public, with it being able to do all the things they said it would be able to do, the price of such a machine would have to be very expensive.

  21. Gravatar Icon 21 Christina

i believed it! Isaac Asimov is my favorite author and naturally i’ve read all his sci-fi novels and short stories, so when i saw this advertisement i was interested but skeptical. I visited the website and was completely sucked in…and started spreading the news about our new NS-5. But a highly rational friend was even more skeptical and we proceded to stumble upon this website which had made me look like a complete ass, but had provided us with a few moments of stomach aching laughter…damnit fox!

  22. Gravatar Icon 22 Joe

I just hope Fox does Asimov justice. I totally agree that he was way ahead of his time (and even our time) when it came to writing robots. If this turns out to be one of these movies where we’re supposed to be amazed that the robot seems so human (AI made me sick) then I’m gonna–I’ll just–well, I guess I wouldn’t really be able to do anything. But I’d be hopping mad, let me tell you. ooh!

Everyone who reads this…. It’s not real will smith is playing the role as a crazy mob robot of some sort. It is false advertisment and people can be lead into thinking they have to sell everything to buy one and when they find out it’s fake they can probably sue for false advertisment.

  25. Gravatar Icon 25 dannyboy

At first i was totally sucked especially since I haven’t read the books or even heard of them for that matter. What make me figure it was a fake was three things. One when those little frases pop up really quickly one of them said the robot was 100% effecient, we can’t even do that theoretically right now, two it said that it run on sunlight or water, if we knew how to make energy from water, well….do you think you’d be paying for gas right not. and third on the “Dr.’s” little pages one of them discusses how he got involved in the whole buisness “while working on my PHD in nanotechnology” Dr.’s will ALWAYS say what school they’re from. I decided to search their names on line and guess what came up…nothing. If their technology was that advanced we would have heard about it, or at least the scientific community would have heard about it.

  26. Gravatar Icon 26 Alex

Who knows it might be real for all we know and if its fake im sure a lot of people are gonna be pissed at foxed.

  27. Gravatar Icon 27 Alex

LOL never mind i just found out a week ago that every thing is fake its just a really neat advertising SO ANYBODY THATS READING THIS NS-5 IS NOT REALLY ITS JUST MOVIE ADVERTISEMENT!!!!!

  28. Gravatar Icon 28 William

here is some proof it is all fake on a search on the “NS-5″ I found a movie site saying this http://www.cinemasavvy.com/i/irobotmovie.html

  29. Gravatar Icon 29 Jurgen

I never believed it, the thing doesnt even have a brand. I first thought it was a prank, but a real expensive one so, I didn’t understand it. Then I found out it was a movie with Will Smith. It comes out in august.

  30. Gravatar Icon 30 Jason

Plus when you look at all the developers all those companies don’t exist.

  31. Gravatar Icon 31 Alfred Owusu

i want you to send me more information.

  32. Gravatar Icon 32 Germz

My dad, who has read I, Robot, gave the site the look over and pointed out that all of the docters and innovators were from the book. That was crushing dissapointment #1. #2 came when I did a search on the movie, came to the real official website, and discovered thatt the movie looks like total crap. I lost a robot slave and a potentialy awesome movie in the same hour.

  33. Gravatar Icon 33 Peter

Fooled me ;) I thought it was really going to hit the stores on July the 16th. They should Put a movie link on the site. In a way its a wake up call for all those geniouses out there to actually come with something of this nature well, not really nature.

  34. Gravatar Icon 34 G-wood

That sux that its not real. I was freaked out when i saw it in the movies on a poster. I told the whole school about it, now i feel stupid. But i guess were better off.

  35. Gravatar Icon 35 Mike

I knew it was fake but hoped it was not. it would be awsome to have a robot slave, well i would not have been able to get one because i am not Bill Gates lol. Putting it in the movies was a dead give away.

Hi i`m south-american from merida-venezuela, so i apologize for my inglish. I yust want to say that there is something that still`s make me think and that is the fact that in the registration part of the site they ask you for make your own ns5. When i first saw the site i wanted to belive, but i study ingenery in the universite so i`m always looking for information about new tecnologies and robots and therefor i was not sure that something so amazing will be real now. Anyway, i¥m very sure that ns5 it is not far from been betwing us, becase in fact there are already robots that can do things that i thougt quite impossible for now. For an example you can take a look at this sites of Qrio the Sony¥s newest invention: http://www.robot.net/qrio/

    http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/QRIO/

Thank you all for any information or comentary send to my email.

  37. Gravatar Icon 37 christina

Ok I need everyones attention the ns-5 is real but will not be released until 2020 I am very sure about this ……… trust me

  38. Gravatar Icon 38 Unknown

Are u guys sure its fake?……. An 800 pound 5 feet something robot that knows how to cook and maybe even sit down and play RAINBOWSIX 3 with me!lol..If its fake then tell FOX people are going to hate them for that lie and at the same time might thank them for the inspiration.. But what I want is everyone to think about this! if a robot was built with those capabilities that means lots of money went in to it as well.. Now after ten years of research on the robot and a robot of that kind thats ten years of money and who knows how much! But say the robot was ready to be revealed and federal law or regulations or whatever didn’t allow it saying the public is not ready for something like that!…think about it!…how would you get your time or money back?..how hard would it be to tweak the robot to where it couldnt perform what it was intended for?…think about it! how long does it take to pull in few millions at the theater from a ok movie?…I dont have the time to explain what iam trying to get at here, I dont want to explain it either. I want people to think about it! And for those of you who say we dont have that type of technology yet!! open your eyes! cause your in for a big suprise…FYI.. All the newest technology that comes into the public hands are already 5 to 10 years old to certain Gorverment Officials! Maybe some of you should watch “Men In Black” again!!!! Who knows maybe it was some truth to that movie too! but anyways I won’t say nothing…lol

ps. You never know who looks at these forums

BOYCOTT THE MOVIE! They have no right to name this movie after Asimov’s story. In the real story, the 3 laws work, and although the humans constantly worry about robot uprisings, the robots just make the world better for humans. After all, robots are based on logic, they have no reason to be power-hungry if they aren’t programmed to. The movie junks this main theme of the story and has the robots revolt, totally invalidating its claim on the same title.

If you are a true science fiction fan, you won’t go see this horrible mockery of one the great Asimov’s best works. Also sign this petition. It doesn’t take long.

A lot of you people make me laugh.

I think mainly foolish people will hate FOX for this “false advertisement”.

I in fact think it’s fairly clever, I was spellbound for about 30 seconds of looking at the NS-5 website before, of course, realising what BS this is.

Perhaps something like the NS-5 COULD be built, perhaps even better than just a “domestic blah blah assistant”.

But “in every home”? shut up, do you realise how much they would cost?

Also, the totally ludacris (yes, its a pun.) statement of it not “crashing” is so laughably wrong. And the aparent “3-laws” constitution for the robots which will allow them to harmlessly co-exist with us is BS as well. It would take a lot to insure a truly intelligent robot could not harm us.

Also, on this note, how far would you trust a 6 foot tall titanium beast capable of lifting 800lbs???

Espcially considering your not going to have a clue how it works or thinks.

And if it can wirelessly recieve updats 24/7, how do you know it wont get a bad one?

bad one could mean anything like it gets intercepted by terrorists, or infact a facist government or something.

imagine if hitler could’ve employed some computer boffins, hijacked the place where the updates are made/sent, and instantly, hes got this titanium army in almost every home!

Also this “symbiotic relationship” they talk of, like the fact that the machine itself is very clever but it took 12 scientists to make it that way, well what happens when they can make themselves?

how far should we persue AI?

    etc, etc, etc

I believe that despite the fact this is a fictional project for a film, it’s definately another reminder of Mankinds inevitable self-inflicted fate.

“2001:A Space Oddysey” had it right in many ways (if you understand the film)

Fucking scary stuff if you ask me.

BITE ME! if i said this wasn’t true…i mean i wanted it to be true, i wanted to make part of the future all the humanity has aimed for. Please are we there yet?, have we crossed the line between what is fiction to what is real, i mean is the fiction today a reality… i have a dream…, i have a dream that some day not far away humans and a.i robots will coexist and peacefully together will build a much better world. They would be happy to be our slaves, and we would be happier being their master…Aw yes life would have a completely different meaning and purpose, whether this is good or bad. im looking forward to this. I’m actually studying at University of Greenwich in Kent (U.K) for this purpose, not to build one but to programme one to do what i want it to do. Finger-crossed.xxx P.S: I think for this to work much quicker every scientist communities should have a say on the matter. you know we are very complex, and so they’re supposed to be if they wanna be like us.

I would like to eventually merge robot and human. I mean think about it, you would have the benefits of being human and the strength, intelligence and other good things about being a robot. Somewhat like the borg in Star trek but not that far. More like Seven Of Nines level. (Voyager)

Though the advertisment for the ns-5 was very clever, it also angerd a lot of people, me for instance. I am a big fan of the movie Bicenntenial man and had always hoped for an advancement like this to come foward. But with that aside, it also makes you wonder at the end of the day how cracked in the head the director must be to actually put MORE money forward to pay for the commercial, the website, and to keep certain people’s (celebrites, etc…) mouths shut until the opening of the movie. To conclude, maybe what they did might not be illegal, but they have lost the trust of so many people and that may actually prevent people from going to see the movie or the websites at all!!!

  46. Gravatar Icon 46 Rob

You people are crazy!! I was mesmerized, amazed, confused and scared all at the same time! I so wanted the NS-5 to be real. I even have the NS-5 that I created on my desktop. But, once I found out it was for a movie, I was disappointed, sure. But, their advertisement campaign is probably one of the best I have ever seen. I say BRAVO FOX. This just makes me want to see the movie even more. It gives you something to fantacise about until the real thing gets here… whenever that will be. Hell, my might start to invent my own… and we’ll see who’s is finished first. (HA HA)

  47. Gravatar Icon 47 Dranimus

Well to my inquiries as same as yours, I was also under the belief that the cinematic advertisment was one of merit but now I am not sure. The advertisement is possibly a fraud but the concept is innovated and original. The idea of a robot that could exist with a positronic brain and a energy consumption consisting of natural sun light and water would be revolutionary. Although fictitious it may be possible. But to also think that we all fell for the same ploy in the advertising of this movie with out looking for evidence consisting of its consumbles being linked to other every day Mechanical devices that we use is ignorance.

Not to be negative towards our subjectivity but I think that we all should hold our glasses high to these innovated ways to advertise, but also we should remember ” the boy who cried wolf” wasn’t always mistaken and most invention comes from imagination.

Cheers to readers and cheers to Fox.

I had never seen the movie I,robot yet, but I sure hope to see it soon! I think it is pretty amazing how far they could go with robotics if it was true ,but then again these days you never know whats true and whats false and it probably wouldn’t suprise anybody either!Actually there is a new robot out .which is about the size of a 8 year old kid and can walk up and down stairs. It also listens to your commands ,I don’t know if there are more like it but i do know if the government, scientist etc.. put one together what makes us think they wouldn’t try to form a family (mom, dad, son etc..) out of them just to see how they react together and if they will perform as a regular human family. I’m kind of a 50/50 chance person on new decisions like robots existing or cars that drive by themselves because one thing is it would be a great idea for these new goals to be accomplished and made out, but theres the other half that makes me feel what if they produce alot and they start to take over us and kill us or something. It sounds kinda funny to think about it but I think it could be possible because if there are tens of thousands produced due to high-demand and the purpose of their help for us what makes me think one won’t disobey commands. It also occurs to me that its easy for us to think its just a computer malfunction but I don’t think so if computers are so smart what makes me think robots can’t take over and try to kill us or maybe not kill us but try to take over or take their own lead own life. Just like we do!

  49. Gravatar Icon 49 Heidi

I wish it was real! That way I wouldn’t have to do so much house work. Darn, that’s too bad. But the concept is real. A-Life and AI is very real, we’re so close, maybe in 2020 we could advance that far. I’d be 26. But they would eventually get mad and try to kill us, I don’t know, I’m just 10.

‘No robot may harm a human being, or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.’-”little lost robot” - Asimov (like you didnt know, BUT for you who DONT) FIRST LAW OF ROBOTICS this must not be adjusted for any purpose. EVER, even if this is just a hoax, keep the law in mind. If you even removed from the first comma on, then a robot could just bump you into the path of a car, you would be hit by a car, but the robot didnt do it, the car did…. Be very wary , You of the human race.

Everyone seems to have missed the most obvious evidence that irobotnow.com is a fake. There are two facts that prove it, evident from the very first page:

First, irobotnow.com and irobotmovie.com both say “select your language below” and then list the exact same set of languages, the list being a very unusual combination.

Second, At the bottom of irobotnow.com on the first page, it says it is copyright and trademark TCF. What could TCF be…. maybe Twentieth Century Fox…? I wonder…

The NS-5 will be released April 1 2005 not by the company in the movie but by an anonymous team of scientists working with Sony.(One reason for calling the main robot in the movie Sunny!)The robot IS REAL and so is the $400,000.00 dollar price tag.Sony will still allow only this much info. to circulate between it’s workers(as I am one of them.) Sony will release more info. later. Great inroduction to the NS-5 with the movie though!!Kunitake Ando’s (the president of sony) son got the idea after reading the book series.

That’s almost as beleivable as the NS-5 being real unfortunately i was one of the many people who fell for the advertisement. However the idea of robot design is not far away i have a completely working design at my hands after i learnt that this site was a fake. I was so angry that i made my own the only thing i need is a visit with my uncle (works in the army) and money to buy parts and plastic.

James are you serious? The NS-5 being real?!?!? You know what day is celebrated on April 1 right? Is what you posted the truth or not? I know you posted that comment 2 months prior to this posting, but I hope to receive a response from you soon. The idea of the humanoid robot with a sophisticated AI is mindboggling. I never thought that I would see such a thing in my life time!!! In either case Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!! Take care everyone.
