Email Spam worse now that Can-Spam is Here
Published 4 years, 7 months ago in sysadminHas anyone else noticed that now that the Can-Spam Act passed by the federal government has gone into effect, spam via email is actually worse than it was?
This is ridiculous. In the past week I’ve received at least 4-5 times more spam than I did in a week last year…
I’d like to install a server-side spam filtering system that’s compatible with qmail, but I don’t have the time or knowledge to actually get it installed… especially since I’ve been considering buying a Handspring Treo 600 to check my email more regularly…
Although, I wonder if I’m getting more spam because of the social networks I’ve joined in the past couple of weeks? Hmmm… I’m going to change those email addresses now…
Anyone want to install a server side spam filter system for me on the cheap?

The deluge of spam I am seeing is from the mydoom virus mostly: the other stuff hasn’t increased appreciably.
Paul,
Agreed, MyDoom hasn’t been good, but I’ve got about 1,200 spam messages in my Junk Mail folder in Mail.app (on Mac OS X, but late last year, I only ran about 900 or so on average a week.. And that folder gets emptied automatically every 7 days… so, I’m thinking spams are way up… I’m still deleting the MyDoom messages manually…
Holy crap! You’re not already using SpamAssassin?
Hey, John. We are installing a server-based spam filter on Live Oak Hosting’s server next week (qmail). If it goes well, I’d be happy to install it for you. I’ll let you know how it goes. In the meantime, Knowspam.net has stopped 99,334 spams for me since July ‘03.
Andy
Lots of people predicted that the CAN-SPAM act would do just as you’ve described: make spam worse. Why? Because, despite the best intentions of the act, spam is now legitimized.
