Quoting Question

Jonathan Greene asks a good question here:

To Quote or Not to Quote

I’ll respond to his question at some point (not enough time in the day folks) but if you’d like to comment on the question, I think it’d be interesting to see what the rest of the blog community thinks about this question. Also, I don’t technically have a copyright on this blog, and I’m guilty of copying things verbatim (case in point) from other sources when they’re obviously not original works, but in your opinion, what’s the right thing to do here?

I think quoting is a good idea, it can add a lot to an article/post. However, it needs to be known what is quoted and where it is from (read: a link). I also try and make sure to not take too much–if the reader wants more she can click the link. I just need XYZ to back up my idea. You can go find ABC.

I like the blockquote style we use on CarbWire. We quote a lot, but it’s easy to see what is quoted.

In my opinion quoting is OK as long as you link back to your source and have a policy that allows the original source to request that they be removed from your site.
