Composition and Impact

Composition and Impact: It’s a beautiful photograph, but do you know WHY it’s beautiful? - I know understand a little more about my camera’s aperture setting, the Golden Mean, Framing and lots of other useful photography stuff.

Speaking of, what do you think of this photo I took of young Jack last night:

Or this one:

It’s my desktop background right now.

The first one is clearer and has this tender beseeching expression and the tiny ear in the corner is cute. But I like the second because it is dreamier and Jack is looking into the dark, he is more confident. The cropping has more impact

I like the pictures — beautiful subject. ;) Regarding a technical photo critique, I’m not really a photographer and don’t know your camera, but your composition was good as far as placing the “interesting points” of the picture according to the rule of thirds — i.e. the eyes. (Of course when looking at a face we subconsciously can’t resist staring at the eyes to attempt eye contact.) I would say that the depth of field/focus is too narrow, though, because both eyes aren’t in focus. In the first picture, Jack’s left eye is in the rule of third point, but is out of focus. Anyway, those are my two cents! I like your blog as well. Thanks for writing and sharing!
